Each year, The Institute of Hispanic Culture brings together Houstonians to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. This fantastic event showcases the best of Hispanic culture, and this year, we are thrilled to invite the DANMAR Academy of Performing Arts (DANMAR), a non-profit organization, to present their original production, “ANAHUAC: A Paradise Between Waters.”
From September 15 to October 15, Americans celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month, honoring the history, legacy, and contributions of Hispanic Americans from Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean, and South and Central America. Hispanic Americans have significantly contributed to the prosperity of the US, embodying the best of American values and leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s culture and economy.
This year, we highlight one of the most culturally and artistically influential Hispanic American countries: MEXICO. Mexicans take immense pride in their unique cultural heritage, with the saying “Como Mexico no hay dos” (There is no other like Mexico) reflecting their belief in Mexico’s uniqueness. Talking about Mexico means talking about diversity, inclusion, art, roots, identity, and a profound sense of belonging. Mexico’s rich national heritage includes 31 World Heritage sites and 7 Intangible Heritage of Humanity items.
“ANAHUAC: A Paradise Between Waters” transports us to the pre-Hispanic Valley of Mexico, where the term Anahuac referred to “earth surrounded by water” and symbolized the universe in the Nahuatl language. This original production transforms an entire country before your eyes, transcending the boundaries of space and time. Experience a vibrant journey through spectacular dance and music, showcasing the emblems of Mexico’s eight regions.
The choreography by Maria Fernanda Urbaez, the magical performance by the Texas Hispanic Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Eddy Marcano, and the Mariachi Imperial de America will captivate you. The extravagant costumes worn by the extraordinary dancers of the DANMAR Company and the Mexican Heritage Company complete this timeless production, honoring the rich cultural heritage of Mexico.
Join us for an unforgettable evening celebrating the beauty and diversity of Hispanic culture with “ANAHUAC: A Paradise Between Waters.”
