Meet a Houston Mom: Meet Liz McDonald | West University Moms

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in Houston?

I am originally from Florida and have lived in Houston for almost 6 years.

Child(ren) and Age(s)?

I have one daughter, Mariana. She is 6 ½ years old.

One thing people would be surprised to know about you…

I am an immigrant’s daughter and very proud to be. My Dad came to Houston, TX from Sao Paulo, Brazil, with my grandmother. Unfortunately, my Dad and Grandmother have since passed, but the stories of their struggles and how they built upon their lives inspire me daily. I definitely am my Father’s daughter.

Favorite local activities to do in Houston?

I enjoy being outdoors and going for a walk along the Buffalo Bayou Park or Memorial Park.

Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world? Please share!

I started my own business this year, Liz McDonald Consulting LLC. www.lizmcdonaldconsultingllc.com (IG – @lizmcdonaldconsulting). Specializing in law firm operations, however, I accept clients in many different industries. I also have a background in retail. (I’ve always said that everybody should work in the restaurant or retail industry once in their life – the customer service skills you gain are unmatched). I enjoy working with small businesses and equipping them with the tools needed to grow and substantially increase their revenue. Tell me your business goals and we’ll do the rest!

I am also involved with Dress for Success Houston and Women of Wardrobe (WOW). I serve on a couple of committees and am passionate about helping women become empowered. I resonate with many of the women that these organizations support, as I am a single mom – and at one point in my life, I wasn’t sure how I was going to get back on my feet to support myself and my daughter, but I overcame many obstacles and here I am! I am committed to raising awareness of the support that is out there for women and single mothers to get back on their feet as well. https://www.dfshouston.org/tootsies-summer-soiree (@dfshouston and @womenofwardrobe)

How has the Houston community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?

Through networking in the community I’ve connected with incredible people, and have been introduced to inspiring organizations that I’ve become involved with. Networking and building relationships are key to being successful. I used to be so shy as a kid, but now I’ll talk to anyone about business. And, you never know who you’ll end up conversing with!

What is the best advice for juggling mommyhood and running a business (or volunteering, working, etc)?

The best advice I’d say, is to do what’s best for YOU. If you have an event and aren’t feeling yourself and need rest, or feel like you’d rather stay home and spend time with your kid – do that. It’s okay to say no to obligations or invites. I do my best to be present with all of my commitments, but at the end of the day, my kiddo and being a healthy, happy Mom is my top priority.

What would you tell the old “You” before you had kids?

There is no rush. : )
I am such a strong believer in “whatever happens, happens.” Time will take you where you need to be.

Funniest shortcut/routine for helping you through parenthood?

Unfortunately, Ubereats. LOL!
