WHAT: The Junior League of Houston, Inc., an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers, sponsored and participated in the annual Childspree benefiting Child Advocates, Inc. on Saturday, August 18,2018.

The Target Central store welcomed over 80 Junior League volunteers to assist nearly 100 children with back-to-school shopping before opening to the public for the day. Volunteers from the League served as personal shoppers to help the children, who are in foster care, select back-to-school clothing and accompanied them and their guardians to an in-store breakfast party. Children also received backpacks bursting with school supplies and other necessities to help them transition seamlessly into the new school year and set them up for success. For most of these youth, this is the first time they have shopped for new school clothes that give them a sense of confidence, belonging and pride on their first day of school. At the event, one eight-year-old was particularly enamored with the diary of her shopper. Junior League member Elizabeth Smith, helped her find and said, “Ms. Elizabeth is so, so, so, so, so, so FUN!”

For almost 30 years, League members have worked with Child Advocates, Inc. in a multitude of capacities. Including volunteering for special projects and events, and creating Life Books. The goal si for every child in foster care to have scrapbook of their life, not only to be used as a therapeutic tool, but often as the only mementos these children have of their biological families. Several League members also volunteer as court appointed special advocates (CASA).

WHEN: Saturday, August 18, 2018, from 6-8 a.m.

WHERE: Target Houston Central, 2580 Shearn St. Houston, TX 77007

WHAT ELSE: From addressing critical issues such as children’s health and education and abuse of women and children, to enhancing the community through cultural enrichment.
