Meet a Houston Mom – Meet Akilah Scott-Amos of Kissed By a Bee Organics | West University Moms

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in Houston?

I am from Chicago, (Bronzeville area) and I’ve been in Houston for almost 4 years!

Child(ren) and Age(s)?

Alex – 17 Aiden – 5

One thing people would be surprised to know about you…

Oh boy .. which one do I choose? well, I love to cosplay and have been a part of the community for over 15 years.

Favorite local activities to do in Houston?

I honestly dont get much time for local activities because on the weekends is when I do vendor events. Those are really fun and give me the opportunity to learn about different neighborhoods/areas in Houston.

When I do have free weekends the family and I like to go to Galveston to fish or hang out on the Waterway in the Woodlands.

Do you have a favorite family-friendly restaurant in the area?

Chic-Fil-A can never do me wrong. LOL

What local places do you go to for pampering and/or mom’s night out?

I love to go to Infinite Blu Massage in Spring, I get wellness shots (B12, lipo and infusions) from Quench IV Studio in Vintage Park and I visit my local nail spa for signature manicures and pedicures!

Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world?

Professionally, I am a 3rd herbalist whose practice revolves around the skin. My family and I grow around 70% of what I use in the products, in our backyard. I am straight old school in my practice and methods. I love to make any and everything from scratch, including my own castille soap, acids, carrier oils, colloidal silver, witch hazel etc. I have natural remedies for eczema, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, sexual health, viral and bacterial infections, etc. My charcoal toothpowder was featured on Dr. Oz in February 2017 and I’ve been invited to Facebook and Groupon’s headquarters to show my products.

How has the Houston community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?

Although I’ve only been here 3 1⁄2 years, Houston has fully embraced me and welcomed me as their own. I stay pretty busy and booked for shows!

What is the best advice for juggling mommyhood and running a business (or volunteering, working, etc)?

I would not be as successful as I’ve been without a VERY supportive partner! My husband takes care of our gardens and also takes care of our youngest son on the weekends when I work (vend), all while finishing up his Master’s program.

What would you tell the old “You” before you had kids?

I would tell the old me that the sky is not the limit .. there is a whole universe filled with stars and galaxies and plants and clusters. You are limitless! Never stop dreaming; never stop being a Toys R Us kid, and you can manifest whatever your desire!

Funniest shortcut/routine for helping you through parenthood?

Does alcohol count? Make weed legal TX and that may be the remedy too! LOL!
