Meet A Houston Mom: Meet Jennifer Solak, Founder of Solak Legal and Author of GoodNight Houston | West University Moms

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in Houston?

I am originally from New Orleans, Louisiana, and I have lived in Houston for 14 years.

Child(ren) and Age(s)?

Garrett, 10
Elliott, 7
Graham, 4

One thing people would be surprised to know about you…

I never drank coffee until I had kids and now I have three coffee machines in my house!

Favorite local activities to do in Houston?

We love visiting all the great parks around town (especially now!), and on hot or rainy days, we really enjoy the Museum of Natural Science. My dinosaur lovers have gotten a lot of mileage out of that membership!

If everyone’s been good, we like to swing by FUNdamentally Toys or grab a treat at Cloud 10 Creamery.

As an adult, I love trying new restaurants with my husband and friends, and visiting all the great local breweries around town. Also, queso and margaritas

Do you have a favorite family-friendly restaurant in the area?

We always have fun at Little Matt’s, Jax Grill, and Karbach Brewery.

What local places do you go to for pampering and/or mom’s night out?

For a real treat, the Trellis spa. And I’ll go pretty much anywhere to hang out with my friends on a Mom’s night out!

Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world? Please share!

Back in 2010, my husband and I co-wrote the children’s book Goodnight Houston to share our love of H-town with our son! We continue to sell the book around town and enjoy having the chance to read to groups of excited kiddos.

I also recently started a law firm, Solak Legal, to help families and small businesses. For families, I focus on estate planning through wills and trusts. It’s a great feeling to bring peace of mind to parents and allow them to live more fully knowing that their family is protected.

I have an upcoming online event, Estate Planning 101, at 4:30 on Wednesday, September 23, 2020, to learn more about how an estate plan can help you. If that time and date do not fit with your schedule, a replay will be made available to all registrants.

I also help small businesses with their legal needs, including everything from entity formation to ongoing advice and general counsel services. I love strategizing with entrepreneurs to help them navigate the best next steps to make their dreams a reality.

How has the Houston community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?

One of the things I love about Houston is that although it’s a big city, it feels more like a small town. The longer you’re here, the more tight-knit the community feels and there never seems to be a lack of friends and colleagues to help.

What is the best advice for juggling mommyhood and running a business (or volunteering, working, etc)?

This seems to be a constant work in progress, but I’ve come to accept that not everything will get done right away, and instead try to focus on one priority that would be most helpful to complete each day.

What would you tell the old “You” before you had kids?

You’re not that busy! Really.

Funniest shortcut/routine for helping you through parenthood?

Putting the kids to sleep in their school clothes!
