Meet A Houston Mom – Meet Lauren | West University Moms

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in town?
Lauren: I grew up in the suburbs of Houston – Kingwood to be specific but I feel like who I am as a mom was much more influenced by my early married & mom years in NYC. We moved to West U from NYC almost 5 years ago.

Child(ren) and Age(s)? I’ve got 4 amazing, crazy, fun and loving little ones: My daughters, Hunter (8) & Sydney (almost 6) and my boys, Luke (3.5) & Kellan (11 months… 1 at the end of October!)

One thing people would be surprised to know about you… Oh, that is tough because I am pretty much an open book… but maybe that I have a serious obsession with historical novels, specifically written by Philippa Gregory.

Favorite local things to do with your kids? We keep busy with a lot of activities in our home, gymnastics at Houston Gymnastics Academy, dance at West U Dance Center & soccer at the Weekly YMCA – all of which we love. But when we are not running around we love love love to hit up the West U Parks. It’s one of the big reasons we chose this neighborhood and you can find us at Colonial Park Pool in the summer. We are also regular visitors to the Houston Zoo. We could go see the animals every weekend and never get tired of it. Especially this time of the year when the weather cools down a little and the animals are all feeling frisky and energetic.

Funniest shortcut/routine for helping you through parenthood? I don’t know if it is funny but I literally set an alarm for EVERYTHING. I mean, my iPhone alarms go off when it’s time to leave for pick up, time to get ready for activities, even time for me to switch between various work tasks. It’s my secret to being on time!

Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world?  I am Houston’s Mommy & Me Photographer at Lauren DeFrehn Photography. You know that glowing inner vision that you imagine when your little one is cuddled up on your lap as you read books and they look up at you with the sweetest expression and you see it from the outside as this beautiful moment? Well, I capture exactly that and present it to you so that you will never forget those sweet moments.

How has this community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?   Oh man, I feel like I came into my own as a mom after moving here! Largely because of my tribe, my village, my mom-friends. They encourage me, they allow me to be myself and we are 100% there for each other. Add in the amazing schools that my kids go to with teachers who genuinely love and care for my little ones (WUES & St Paul’s School) and I feel like I am able to be a full-time mom and a full-time photographer all at once.
