Meet a Houston Mom – Meet Megan of Magpies | West University Moms

Megan: I am originally from Bellaire, TX.  I was born and raised here and in fact, my parents STILL live in the same house in which they brought me home from the hospital!

Children and Ages: I have three little girls.  One four-year-old named “Mary Merle” and twin two-year-olds Annabelle and Georgia.

One thing people would be surprised to know about you… I often get comments from people in public places that notice me with my three girls so close in age.  I get a lot of “Oh you poor thing, you have your hands FULL and bless your heart, etc.”  I guess they might be surprised to know that I wouldn’t change my situation for all the money in the world!  Motherhood has been my life’s richest blessing and when they say, “Oh God bless you” I say, “Oh he already has!”

Favorite local things to do with your kids? I love packing a picnic lunch and going to the Nature Discovery Center with my girls.  It’s nice and shady and they love to visit the rabbits and play on the playscape.  We also love to collect bits of “nature” for our nature bowl at home.

Funniest shortcut/routine for helping you through parenthood? During the summer, we like taking “back yard baths.”  We just bring out the soap and shampoo and hose them down in the back yard.  Fun and efficient (and refreshing when it’s 100 degrees outside!)

Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world? Please share!  I am co-owner of Magpies Gifts a family business that opened in 1983, a special place to find unique gifts and treasures for the home. It has now expanded to include gifts for everyone including babies and kids, for men and of course, gifts for us women.  I started working there when I was 26 and truly love what I do!  For the last 19 years, I have worked out at our Sugar Land location, but as my girls get older, I see myself transitioning over to the Bellaire store.

How has this community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?  The Bellaire community has always been HOME to me.  As I mentioned above my parents still live in the same house I was raised in.   I grew up on a block where we all knew and cared for each other.   As a child, I split my time between visiting and socializing with the elderly/grandparent type neighbors and knocking on the doors of the young families with babies, so that I could “hold and love on them.”  The Bellaire community embraced our family’s business through the 30 plus years we have been open, and the relationships that have been formed through the shop have truly blessed me and my family’s life.
