Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in Houston?
I’m originally from Philadelphia and have lived in Houston since January 2012
Child(ren) and Age(s)?
Two girls, Libby, 5 years old, and Juniper, 1 year old
One thing people would be surprised to know about you…
I like to build things— I built the tables and original banquets at Dandelion Cafe’s Bellaire location, and did much of the tile work when we first opened. I’ve also done my own built-ins and a banquet in my house.
Favorite local activities to do in Houston?
I love eating in Chinatown. Asian food is my favorite.
Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world?
I own Dandelion Cafe with my husband, JC who is the executive chef, and we have locations in Bellaire and on Rice’s campus. We also recently opened our new location in The Heights on 22nd street.
How has the Houston community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?
The local community has supported both our cafe and us as individuals. I am always so humbled and grateful when I see people who have been coming to Dandelion for so long, so many have been supporting us since day one. We’ve gotten to know their families and even become friends with some. To me, they’re coming for more than just good food, they’re supporting our family and the families of our team members.
What is the best advice for juggling mommyhood and running a business (or volunteering, working, etc)?
Go with the flow and deal with situations as they arise. Learn to let go of control and bring in a team of dependable people you trust. There’s always an adjustment period, but once you breakthrough the barrier of trying to manage everything alone and allow others to be part of the support team, things become more manageable. It’s impossible to control everything, so don’t wear yourself out physically and emotionally by trying to do so. Worry less about what could have been or what may happen, and focus on the present.
What would you tell the old “You” before you had kids?
Be present in the moment. It’s easy to become consumed by work and our responsibilities as adults before kids, let alone once you have them. Appreciate the moments you have to yourself.
Funniest shortcut/routine for helping you through parenthood?
The Jewish Community Center pool is my go-to in the summer. I can take the kids there and they can run around and swim while I hang out with another mom friend. It’s not quite “me” time, but it’s close and it gives some companionship and a space where we can relate and appreciate our time.
