Meet A Houston Mom – Meet TuWana NaToi of A Mother’s Keeper Doula Services | West University Moms

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in Houston?

I am originally from Houston. I lived here my entire life until 2011 then I moved back in 2015.

Child(ren) and Age(s)?

I have boy girl twins who are 2 years old

One thing people would be surprised to know about you…

That I want 4 more children. Most people think because I have boy girl twins I shouldn’t want more children. I’ve always wanted a big family! Oh, and I am terrified of frogs.

Favorite local activities to do in Houston?

Hanging out with other moms. I’ve created my own mommy meet up group, so I love planning activities and meeting new moms. I also love all the free activities that are in Houston (Discovery Green, La Centera, The Square at Memorial City mall and The Green City Centre) as a newly single mom I appreciate that I don’t have to spend a ton to have a great time with my twins.

Do you have a favorite family-friendly restaurant in the area?

Bella Green, Dish Society, and Jupiter are my favorite. The food is great and what I love about it most is that when you eat outside there’s an area the children can go play and let loose in. Gives me time to enjoy my mimosa!

What local places do you go to for pampering and/or mom’s night out?

Anthony Vince in City Centre and VIP Nails in Katy are my favorite to go spots to relax and get my nails done. LifeSpa in City Centre is my go-to for massage Misty there is amazing!

The Monalisa in City Centre is a great place for moms night out. Its free and the view of City Centre is amazing at night.

Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world? Please share!

I’m a birth/postpartum doula and my business is called A Mother’s Keeper Doula Services. My mission is to give moms the birth they want and to cater to them throughout their entire pregnancy and the postpartum period. I also give free birth doula care to teen moms as a way to give back to my community. Even though the mom is a teen she still needs love and attention through this journey and not be shamed for being a teen mom.

I created a mommy meet up group Moms Who Mingle that allows moms to meet up, connect and form long lasting friendships. This year I am launching Crepes and Conversations where we get together as moms and talk about different topics. I love meeting new moms and listening to their journey through motherhood because we all have a different story.

How has the Houston community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?

I’ve had so many moms repost things on Instagram. Local boutiques and restaurants have offered to let me host events.  I have also been in Houston Chronicle.

What is the best advice for juggling mommyhood and running a business (or volunteering, working, etc)?

Honestly my best advice will be to find/build a tribe and self-care! My tribe has helped me out in so many ways. If you are a single mom like myself take advantage of the time you have when the kids are gone.

What would you tell the old “You” before you had kids?

Not to give up. Pace yourself and have a plan. Dream big and don’t doubt yourself

Funniest shortcut/routine for helping you through parenthood?

Teach the kids early. The sooner they learn the easier it is for them to help you and trust me they want to help. Do things the night before to plan for the next day.
