Mona: I am originally from Pakistan but have grown up in London, England for most of my life. I moved to Houston 18 years ago.
Child(ren) and Age(s)?
I have 3 wonderful kids. They are 13, 10 and 6 and keep me very busy.
One thing people would be surprised to know about you…
There is not much that can’t be solved with a nice cup of tea!
Favorite local things to do in Houston?
I love checking out the museums in Houston. When I first moved to Houston I didn’t realize that it had such a vibrant theater and museum scene! The children also love it, there are so many exhibits to explore.
Do you have a favorite family-friendly restaurant in the area?
We love going to Auntie Pastos. It is a quaint little Italian spot right in Bellaire.
Funniest shortcut/routine for helping you through parenthood?
Pre-prepared food! Great for saving time in the kitchen and feeding hungry bellies.
Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world? Please share!
I recently started a new business venture opening up a wellness studio in the neighborhood, Defy. We opened last year with the desire to bring technology-based wellness services and solutions to the community. We offer a range of personalized services and programs that not only help you feel your best but also help maintain your health, overcome injuries, aid weight loss, skin conditions, lack of sleep, etc. Our services range from Cryotherapy, Float therapy, Infra-red sauna, BEAMER pad, and many more.
How has this community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?
Based on our interactions with the community, the response has been positive. The neighborhood is excited to have a wellness studio that is not only affordable but also convenient. Many clients pop in during their lunches or after work to de-stress and rejuvenate. A few couples like to come in and use it as their date night. We really strive to spread awareness, because there are many “day-spas” in the city however Defy is the only science-based wellness center in Houston.
What is the best advice for juggling mommyhood and running a business (or volunteering, working, etc)?
It helps me to take time out on Sunday evening and plan out my week. Takes about half an hour but when you are juggling so many counterparts from multiple after-school activities as well as everything you need to on the home and work front, it helps you to be organized.
What is your go-to activity for yourself for pampering or for fun?
Reading! I really enjoy getting lost in a good book, it is luxury that I don’t get to do as much as would like to with the busy schedule.
What would you tell the old “You” before you had kids?
Sleep, eat, enjoy! And don’t takes things so seriously….having kids changes your perspective on the importance of things.
