Meet A Mom – Meet Julie Blumberg | West University Moms

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in Houston?

Julie: Born and raised in Houston, just a couple of blocks from where I live now. I did get away for four years during college to Tucson, Arizona, where I attended the University of Arizona, but knew as soon as I was done, I’d be back in Houston.

Child(ren) and Age(s)?

I have one little girl, Zoe, who is 15 months.

One thing people would be surprised to know about you…

If you put tomatoes or ketchup near me, I’ll panic! I have a strong dislike towards both of them. Always have, always will.

Favorite local things to do in Houston?

Houston has evolved so much since my childhood! I love checking out all the local pop up markets around town, I love walking to the Meyerland Farmers Market, and I’m still in awe of Levy Park.

Funniest shortcut/routine for helping you through parenthood?

To get Zoe to drink her milk, we have taught her to clink glasses and say “cheers!” This tradition continues even when we are dining at restaurants and it gets varying reactions from strangers. Whatever it takes, right?

Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world? Please share!

Yes, I am! I have been a K-8 tutor for several years and recently joined my mentor Dee Dee Halpin of Houston School Options as an Educational Consultant. HSO has been helping families find the right fit school for their child/children for the last 25 years. There are so many pieces to the Houston educational system, and we really enjoy helping make the process easier for families. We work with families looking for Mother’s Day Out programs through high school. We work a lot with families who have just relocated to Houston, often from overseas. We also work with local families who may be at a natural school transition or families who are looking for a mid-year or end of year change for their child. In my spare time, I enjoy volunteering and I am the “Chief Packaging Director” for my husband’s Etsy shop – The Map Collection. But my favorite role of all- is being Mom!

How has the community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?

I am a direct product of the Houston education system. I have attended the schools, taught at the schools, and now I tutor in the schools as well as visit the schools with families. It’s ingrained in me.
