If you want a show that stays with you long after the curtain falls, Hadestown is at the Houston Hobby Center right now and it was so good. If you are looking for something different and memorable to do this week or weekend, this is it. From the very first note, I was completely mesmerized. The cast was incredible. I was captivated the entire time. It is one of those shows that feels exciting, meaningful, and honestly impressive from start to finish.
The story follows two intertwined love stories. One centers on Orpheus and Eurydice, young dreamers holding onto hope in a difficult world. The other focuses on Hades and Persephone, a powerful couple navigating control, compromise, and connection. The journey takes you to the underworld and back, but it never feels overly dark. Instead, it feels layered, emotional, and surprisingly hopeful.
The music is outstanding, with a soulful, bluesy, almost folk vibe that gives the whole production a distinct energy. The ensemble brings so much movement and life to the stage, and there is a reason this show has won eight Tony Awards and so many other honors. Everything feels intentional. The storytelling is strong, the performances are powerful, and the staging is creative without being complicated.
Knowing the musical was written entirely by Anaïs Mitchell makes it even more special. That singular vision really stands out. If you are planning a date night, a girls night, or just want an excuse to get dressed up and enjoy a night out in Houston, Hadestown feels like such a treat. Houston always gets wonderful Broadway tours, but this one truly feels special. If you are debating what to do while it is in town, go. It was that good.
