Houston Grand Opera Presents West Side Story Starting January 31, 2025
Houston Grand Opera (HGO) is set to open its highly anticipated production of the blockbuster musical West Side Story on January 31, 2025. This iconic Broadway masterpiece, created by Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, Jerome Robbins, and Arthur Laurents, will captivate audiences with seven mainstage performances and one exclusive High School Night at the Wortham Theater Center.
A Musical Masterpiece Comes to Life
Directed by the legendary Francesca Zambello and conducted by Roberto Kalb in his HGO debut, this co-production with Glimmerglass Festival and Lyric Opera of Chicago transforms Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet into a poignant tale of love and conflict set in 1950s New York City. With dazzling choreography, unforgettable music, and a stellar cast, West Side Story promises to be an extraordinary experience for all.
The Cast and Creative Team
- Shereen Pimentel: Making her HGO debut as Maria, a role that earned her an Outer Critics Circle Award on Broadway.
- Brenton Ryan: A charismatic tenor portraying Tony.
- Yesenia Ayala: A Broadway and film sensation debuting as Anita.
- Kyle Coffman: Debuting as Riff, alongside Ayala, following their performances in Steven Spielberg’s 2021 film adaptation.
