Story written by Christine Detris
Just two hours north of New York City lies our family’s year-round getaway—the Catskill Mountains. My husband and I purchased our vacation home in the Catskills right after getting married, and we’ve loved watching it become a special place for our daughters, friends, and family to gather over the years. If you live nearby, it makes for a great quick trip, or if you’re visiting the NYC area, tack on a weekend to check it out!
The Catskills has so much to offer families—beautiful nature, kid-friendly adventures, and unique places to explore. Read on for some of our favorite farm-to-table restaurants, accommodations that genuinely understand family needs, and activities for every age.
WHERE TO STAY
With locations in Oliverea Valley and Windham, these Scandinavian-inspired rooms and minimalist cabins offer a luxury glamping experience.
We’ve honestly never seen anything like this hotel in over lives. From the Wizard of Oz-themed room to the two-bedroom Faerie Cottage, your entire family will love this whimsical retreat.
Situated on 68-acres that overlook the Big Indian Wilderness Forest Preserve, suites in this ultra-trendy lodge feature Japanese cedar soaking tubs, private decks, and fireplaces.
More than just a hotel, it’s an experience. Enjoy s’mores on the deck with sweeping views of Hunter Mountain, shop mission-driven brands in the lodge, or attend one of their many seasonal events–they even have their own newspaper to showcase everything they have to offer. Bonus points for being pet-friendly!
From mountainside A-frames and yurts, to sprawling estates that can host the whole family (grandparents, too!), you’re guaranteed to find a spot that fits your needs.
WHERE TO EAT
While this family and pet-friendly inn offers sophisticated dishes and an extensive wine list, locals know to go on Wednesdays for “Burgers and Beer.”
We can’t get enough of the lattes and breakfast bowls at this family-run Korean cafe, but it’s the playroom that takes it up a notch, giving squirmy kiddos a place to let loose while parents caffeinate.
Owned by Gramercy Tavern and Le Bernardin vets, this upstate staple is elevated but approachable. Our kids, our parents, and our friends have all given it their seal of approval.
You might recognize this hotspot from the latest season of Severance, but its popularity isn’t just hype—there’s a reason it’s packed every weekend. The food is outstanding (get the pancakes!), the service is inviting, and the outside has space for kids and dogs to roam free.
This is a strong statement, but I stand by it: Café Marguerite makes the best donuts I’ve ever had in my life, and the best French pastries this side of the Atlantic.
WHERE TO PLAY
Not only is this ski resort the only one in the Catskills with a gondola, it is renowned for its ski school which starts children at 4 years old. On Fridays In the summer, they host family-friendly concerts, gondola rides, food trucks and more.
This playful shop and cafe has coffee, pastries, and cheeky home goods. Need a gift for someone? You’ll find it here. Craving Roberta’s pizza or in the market for an alligator-shaped garlic press? You can also get that here.
Pedal along the Ulster & Delaware Railroad, over the river, and through the woods on this family and pet-friendly adventure. Choose from seven different tours that each offer scenic views and fresh air.
An afternoon at this resort has something for everyone: Miles of nature trails, a renowned spa, and the “World’s Largest Kaleidoscope.”
Arguably one of the most popular attractions in the Catskills, this landmark is the highest cascading waterfall in New York. Be sure to arrive early on weekends, as parking lots fill up quickly.
PARENTS DAY/NIGHT OUT
Just down the street from Doolittles, the Print House offers live music, craft cocktails, and a rotating food menu sourced from local ingredients.
This small batch brewery passes the vibe check with mountain views, fire pits, DJs and local food vendors.
The history alone is enough to attract visitors (Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, and Johnny Cash played here), but the current lineup of concerts and events is next level. (They also host Rock and Roll Playhouse from time to time, if you want to bring little ones.)
Listed as one of the Top 200 Restaurants in the World by Conde Nast Traveler, Brushland offers magical dining experiences. Order from an a la carte menu on Thursday nights, attend a three course family-style meal on the weekends, or be lucky enough to catch a Persian Dinner, offered seasonally.
Mixing kitsch (hello, Dolly Parton-themed restroom) with dive (darts!), the Andes Hotel has great food, a fun bar, and Karaoke on Friday nights.
