Local Student at Houston Christian Earned an Internship with the Baylor College of Medicine
Houston Christian High School gave me a pathway from the classroom to Baylor College of Medicine’s Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, and all before my graduation.
My name is Taylor Allen and I began working at the Breast Center the summer after my junior year of high school where I assisted in one of the labs, supporting breast cancer research and working alongside professional scientists to learn about research and a career in academia. This amazing opportunity allowed me to explore my future career path and secure years of experience before setting foot on a college campus, and I owe this all to my years at Houston Christian.
I have attended Houston Christian since ninth grade. Prior to enrolling, I visited the campus and immediately felt a sense of community. However, what ultimately led me to enroll was the school’s Distinguished Scholars Program, which mirrors a graduate level research program that emphasizes research and presentation skills.
Attending Houston Christian has been the best decision for my academic and social success. Dedicated teachers, both inside and outside of the science department, encouraged me to pursue my passion for science and gave me the tools necessary to expand my research interests. Under the guidance of the DSP teachers and mentors, I wrote my paper on cancer research and therapy. When I interviewed for the job at the Breast Center, the professionals there told me I was hired both because of my paper and because of the leadership and interpersonal skills I had learned at Houston Christian, which were rare for high school students and well suited for working in a lab.
I would absolutely recommend Houston Christian to prospective students. The skills and knowledge I learn every day in school will serve me throughout my life, both in the workplace and in social settings. Whatever career path or passion you wish to seek, Houston Christian will find a way to give you the experience and skills you need to succeed.
