Meet a Houston Mom | Emma Arzate of Detail Cleaning Services - West University Moms

Tell us about your business:

I am the owner of Detail Cleaning Services, we are a Veteran owned company that has been serving the community for over 13 years. I was in college when my mother, one of the founders, asked me to help her get more homes to clean. After speaking with several clients I fell in love with the idea of helping people have more free time by cleaning their home while creating jobs for the community. After 3 years in business, my brother who had just finished serving in the Army decided to join the family business bringing in the leadership skills he developed during his military service. He is now an owner as well and has helped me make this one of the best cleaning companies in the area.

How many kids do you have?
I have 4 kids, two girls and two boys.

What are your favorite local activities to do in Houston?
My kids love Discovery green especially when there is nice weather. We also love Little Matt’s. It’s kid-friendly and has an amazing vibe plus I love supporting local small businesses!

What is the best advice for juggling mommyhood and running a business (or volunteering, working, etc)?

Finding a balance between work and my family is very important. Both my business and being a mom are important and at times, things will come up where I will have to prioritize one over the other and that’s ok. I learned to set boundaries, prioritize and ask for help. Getting help is the hardest but what has saved my sanity. Having a support system and using it, helps us realize that we can’t do it all and helps with the mom’s guilt that many of us busy moms have. Another thing that has helped is being intentional not only with my work but also by scheduling family time like if it was an important meeting.

What would you tell the old “You” before you had kids?
Sleep more because having kids especially twins will bring lots of joy along with many sleepless nights! Ha! Give yourself the grace to learn and to take care of yourself. Your mental, emotional and physical health is as important as your baby’s.
