In December 2025, the Adolescent Community and High School programs at St. Catherine’s Montessori were officially recognized by the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI). This distinction establishes St. Catherine’s as the first and only school in the United States, among the first in the world, to offer a continuous AMI education across the entire developmental arc, from infancy through high school graduation.

Upper School Director, Dr. Brian Tucker notes, “This recognition reflects many years of tireless dedication of our guides. Their commitment to nurturing adolescents into capable, thoughtful adults has brought this vision to life.”

Founded by Dr. Maria Montessori in 1929, AMI exists to preserve the integrity of her pedagogy and her vision of education as an aid to human development and a conduit for peace. With the recent development of their Adolescent Diploma courses and the 2025 launch of the formal recognition pathway for programs serving students ages 12–18, AMI finally made consultation and recognition possible for all levels—opening the door to a fully articulated AMI journey.

At St. Catherine’s, the AMI pedagogy has long informed our educational approach at all levels, maintaining years of AMI recognition status for Infant, Primary, and Elementary programs. Adolescent recognition affirms our sustained commitment to Montessori education as Dr. Montessori envisioned it: grounded in respect for the individual, responsive to universal human developmental needs, and carefully prepared for each progressive stage of childhood and adolescence.

A Continuous AMI Journey, Ages 14 months–18 years

St. Catherine’s AMI recognition reflects our living commitment to preparing environments where children and adolescents develop independence, intellectual curiosity, personal responsibility, and a sense of purpose. Guided by AMI standards, we honor students with the respect, tools, and community needed to flourish at every stage of development.

AMI’s recognition program supports Montessori schools in upholding the high educational standards set out by Dr. Montessori. AMI standards ensure mixed-age classes, appropriate student-teacher ratios, a full complement of Montessori materials in each prepared environment, uninterrupted work-cycles that allow freedom of movement and choice, and teachers (known as guides) trained in Montessori’s scientific approach to human development.

Both AMI standards and Montessori training courses are specific to the unique learning characteristics of each stage of development: Infancy (0-3), Primary (3-6), Elementary (6-12), and Adolescent (12-18). This specialization equips each AMI guide to meet the distinct needs and qualities of a particular stage of life, ensuring joyful and purposeful learning.

To maintain AMI recognition status, each level undergoes a consultation every three years, with recognition granted at three levels:

  1. AMI Recognized programs meet all AMI standards with 100% of guides holding an AMI diploma at the level served. (Adolescent programs must have at least one teacher holding an AMI diploma in a position to guide pedagogy, with multiple adults, both generalists and specialists, collaborating as a team, guided by Montessori principles.)
  2. AMI Affiliated programs meet all AMI standards with 50-100% of faculty holding a diploma at the level in question.
  3. AMI Associated status recognizes developing programs that are working toward achieving all AMI standards and programs with 50% of faculty AMI trained.

Currently, St. Catherine’s programs are recognized by AMI as follows:

  • Infancy (14 months – 3 years)—AMI Recognized
  • Early Childhood (3–6 years)—AMI Recognized
  • Elementary (6–12 years)—AMI Affiliated*
  • Adolescence (12–18 years)—AMI Recognized

St. Catherine’s continuity of AMI standards across programs upholds Dr. Montessori’s vision of natural human development and respects the unique characteristics, sensitivities, and educational needs at every level. In keeping with the school’s 2023-2028 Strategic Plan, AMI recognition across all levels advances our goals to enhance Montessori excellence and capitalize on our Upper School.

*The Elementary program’s AMI Affiliated status reflects an active moment of committed professional growth. The Elementary level fully meets AMI standards, guided by a deeply experienced, predominantly AMI-trained faculty. Currently, five out of six Elementary guides are AMI Elementary diploma holders, with the sixth pursuing the diploma.

Decades in the Making—Completing the Arc

Recognition of St. Catherine’s adolescent programs represents the culmination of years of intentional development and sustained collaboration with AMI. Faculty and leadership have participated in the Adolescent Orientation, hosted AMI consultants and observers, and contributed to the wider Montessori community through research and professional exchanges.

St. Catherine’s followed closely as AMI developed the Adolescent Diploma course, refining our adolescent practice in alignment with emerging standards. The adolescent years represent a critical stage of social, moral, and intellectual formation—one that Montessori believed required environments rooted in meaningful work, responsibility, and connection to real-world purpose. Our program’s AMI fidelity is visible in the preparation of our Adolescent Community and High School environments and the unique engagement between adolescent students and guides.

Speaking of our Upper School program, the AMI consultants closed their visit with this note:

[St. Catherine’s] Adolescent Community has grown and evolved over the years and has pushed its practices toward authenticity in steps and stages, but always with vision and intention. The High School Community is growing and evolving, finding ways to observe and meet the needs of older adolescents, which is a relatively new and emerging practice in Montessori education worldwide. The High School team demonstrates positive vision and intention, willing to be pioneers in the work as they listen carefully to the emerging young adults they guide and support. They are curating a program that other schools can learn from!

This accomplishment is the fruit of decades of fidelity to Montessori principles and ongoing professional development. St. Catherine’s guides are deeply prepared to work in attunement with students’ developmental needs, supporting their emerging independence as they prepare to step confidently into the adult world.

Leading with Purpose

Since its founding in 1966, St. Catherine’s has always and only grown with intentionality, faithful to Montessori principles and responsive to the needs of our students and families. Each new level has emerged from a desire for continuity of learning in an environment that understands children’s developmental needs and honors their emerging independence.

St. Catherine’s graduates leave High School as articulate, self-directed young adults who understand how to pursue meaningful work, manage their time, and collaborate thoughtfully. They matriculate to top-choice colleges and universities that reflect personal fit—where their intellectual curiosity and sense of purpose can continue to flourish.

Most importantly, our students are afforded respect and trust to develop their unique gifts and cultivate habits of reflection, perseverance, and service from their earliest years. They carry with themselves practiced responsibility in community life and confidence in their capacity to contribute to the wider world. St. Catherine’s alumni choose their next chapters with discernment and a clear sense of who they are becoming.

As Montessori education continues to evolve globally, St. Catherine’s is demonstrating what is possible when authenticity, long-term vision, and deep respect for human development guide educational practice.

Head of School, Lina Delgado affirms, “St. Catherine’s is honored to stand at the forefront of this work and to walk this path alongside our students, families, alumni, guides, and staff. We could not do this work without their partnership and trust in our shared mission.”

For families looking for a Montessori school in Houston, St. Catherine’s offers a truly unique, continuous AMI experience from infancy through high school.  For more information about St. Catherine’s and its Montessori programs, visit https://www.stcathmont.org.
