Meet a Houston Mom | Meet Ashka Din of Oh My Baby! Ultrasound | West University Moms

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in Houston?

My parents are immigrants from India, but I was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and have lived in Houston for over 35 years.

Child(ren) and Age(s)?

I have a 4-year-old daughter, Leela Abigail. And a 2-year-old son, Shayar Gregory.

One thing people would be surprised to know about you…

In my college days, I had the honor of being the captain of the UofH Bollywood dance team, which frequently competed in statewide competitions. Coincidentally, my husband held the position of dance captain for Baylor’s team, setting the stage for some friendly rivalry in our dance endeavors. Our paths truly intertwined when we were both hired as professional Bollywood dancers on a cruise ship. Destiny brought us together on the dance floor. The rest, as they say, is history.

Favorite local activities to do in Houston?

Our family enjoys spending quality time at local parks, museums, and community events. We also love going to the numerous cultural functions that are held year-round. And, without fail, you’ll spot us at our favorite Tex-Mex restaurant, savoring the flavors of Houston.

Are you involved in a business venture, a local organization, a creative endeavor, or in the corporate world? Please share!

In 2009, I earned my undergraduate degree from the University of Houston, and by 2011, I had completed my ultrasound training. For the following ten years, I dedicated myself to a rewarding career at one of Texas’ most distinguished maternal fetal medicine clinics. Despite finding fulfillment in my profession, the desire to be fully present for my two young children led me to transition into the role of a stay-at-home mom just last year. However, my unwavering passion for ultrasound and patient care persisted, and my entrepreneurial spirit drove me to establish Oh My Baby! Ultrasound

OMB offers a unique and convenient concierge service that transforms ultrasounds into the ultimate bonding experience for moms-to-be. In a post-COVID world where limited visitors are allowed in ultrasound appointments, OMB fills a void by providing an opportunity for loved ones to witness the miracle of pregnancy. As a mother, I know firsthand how special it would have been to have my daughter and mother see my son’s growth in my belly during my pregnancy. OMB brings something truly exceptional to our city. Imagine hosting a baby shower where all your close family and friends can watch the baby live on your TV screen! Or a private session to experience the joy of witnessing your baby yawn, suck their thumb, or even smile. These breathtaking moments are now accessible not only to the mother but to the entire family. OMB is redefining the ultrasound experience, making it an unforgettable memory that everyone can share.

How has the Houston community been instrumental in getting you to where you are now?

The Houston community has played a crucial role in shaping my journey and the success of Oh My Baby! Ultrasound. As a Houstonian for over 35 years, I’ve had the privilege of being part of a diverse, vibrant, and supportive community that values entrepreneurship and innovation. Houston’s growing population and demand for healthcare services create a favorable market for innovative healthcare solutions like Oh My Baby! The city’s welcoming attitude towards new ventures has enabled my business to thrive.  Houstonians are known for their generosity and community spirit, most recently highlighted during the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, where complete strangers banded together to help those affected and to rebuild our beautiful city. I’ve received immense support from the local community, whether it’s through word-of-mouth referrals, collaborations with local businesses, or the warm reception of my services.

What is the best advice for juggling mommyhood and running a business (or volunteering, working, etc)?

Surprisingly, I’ve discovered that motherhood and entrepreneurship share many similarities. That’s why I affectionately refer to OMB as my “third baby”! Both roles have imparted invaluable lessons, with patience being the most notable. I’ve learned to exercise patience in abundance, whether with my children or my business.  My best advice would be to take it one day at a time while focusing on the big picture and don’t stress the small stuff. Of course, the sleepless nights are a shared experience too! However, every moment has been incredibly rewarding.

What would you tell the old “You” before you had kids?

My husband and I faced several years of infertility before we were blessed with a pregnancy. We explored various paths to conceive and ultimately succeeded through IVF, for which we’re incredibly grateful to modern science. Reflecting on this journey, I’d tell my former self a valuable truth: “The hardest climbs have the most beautiful views.” It’s essential to remember that even during the most challenging moments when hope seems distant, maintaining faith and perseverance is key. Never give up!

Funniest shortcut/routine for helping you through parenthood?

Ha! Shortcut? What’s that? I’m a bit new to the parenthood game, will circle back when I find any 😉
