Sugaring: the New Hair Removal Treatment, Too Sweet Not to Share! | West University Moms

When it comes to getting rid of unwanted hair on your body, shaving and waxing are the most popular easy treatments, that aren’t too pricey, however, there is another possibility that’s a much sweeter deal — literally, and Ndidi of Suga Mama’s Body Sugaring (which is conveniently located in River Oaks) is going to explain it to us!

I visited her last week just to try something different: now that summer is practically here, I live in shorts and honestly, sometimes I am too busy to remember to shave and thought it would be a good time to check out her studio.  Plus, nothing like a pamper session for this mama!

Sugaring is a hair removal treatment that has been practiced for centuries throughout Northern Africa, Greece and the Middle East. Sugar paste is made from sugar, water and lemon juice. A paste is created when the 3 ingredients are combined and heated to a taffy-like consistency. According to salon founder Ndidi, it is by far one of the most gentle (and healthy) techniques, and it’s a natural alternative to lasers or chemicals from waxing. As an added bonus, it lasts longer than traditional waxing methods, as it removes the hairs from roots.

Once you try sugaring, she bets you never go back to waxing!

The Pros:
Sugaring uses only natural ingredients. The preparation is 100% natural, and the paste contains water and sugar, with no chemical, fragrance or coloring. It is hypoallergenic and causes no skin irritation. It is so natural that sweet-toothed person could even eat it! Waxing is made of resins and often, toxic chemicals as well. These ingredients are sometimes irritating, if not toxic, to the skin. The sugar paste can also be composted once you are finished using it!

Sugaring paste is applied at body temperature, and it will not burn your skin in ways that hot wax can. Due to its gooey consistency, it does not hurt when It is pulled away from the skin.

Sugar paste can be cleaned up easily with water, you will never leave a Sugaring treatment feeling sticky, unlike wax which contains resins and requires chemical solvents to remove its residues.

Sugaring does remove dead skin cells – so as the hair is removed your skin is also getting exfoliated. Sugaring Paste is hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic. Sugar naturally helps control cross-contamination, and bacteria cannot breed in the tub of sugar.

The Cons:
None really!

A little bit about Ndidi:
Ndidi’s journey in the beauty industry began 6 years ago, when she started an import/export company, distributing hair products to professional stylists. Her desire for a more hands-on approach moved her towards industry-specific education.

While training to become an esthetician, she developed an enthusiasm for both hair removal and teaching others. After lengthy research on different methods used to removed hair, she found that body sugaring is by far the best method for the skin. Upon earning her professional license, Ndidi set forth to start a new business venture, this time focusing on skincare. She opened Suga Mama’s Body Sugaring in January of 2017, to serve the public. She has started making strides toward the educational side of beauty and plans to teach in the Houston market.

Ndidi aspires to empower others, and through education, it is her goal to expand the sugaring industry, making it the most viable method of hair removal.

I was thrilled with the outcome and with the procedure. It was painless and actually very relaxing for a hair removal procedure. My legs are super smooth and summer ready!
